Chapter 416 - 409: They... Accepted Me?
Chapter 416 - 409: They... Accepted Me?
’And she even called me... Young Madam?!’
Her feigned look of anger had no real bite to it. Seth Quinn still didn’t hide the smile on his face, but he did answer her question.
"I asked her to come over and help make some porridge." The last time he made it himself, and while the gesture was sincere, the taste was a bit lacking.
So this time, he simply called Mrs. Cheney over to help, so Clara could have some delicious, stomach-soothing porridge as soon as she woke up.
Clara was a little worried. "Aren’t you afraid she’ll go back and tell your parents I’m here?"
’What if they get angry and take it out on Seth?’
"Mrs. Cheney already knew you were here before she came over." Seth watched her eyes widen in disbelief and continued to explain, "When I called home, I specifically said I needed Mrs. Cheney to come help make porridge for you."
"And, they didn’t stop her? They weren’t angry with you?" Clara was truly surprised.
"Nope. Not only did they not stop her, they even had the family chauffeur drive Mrs. Cheney over. That’s why I said you don’t have to worry about my parents. Their actions already show their attitude."
Seth hadn’t overheard the conversation between Theodore Quinn and Sienna Hale, but when he called home this morning, he understood their intentions from the tone they used when speaking about Clara Grant.
"They... accept me?" Clara still couldn’t believe it. Just yesterday, Mrs. Quinn had been so concerned about her background. How could she have changed her attitude toward her overnight?
Seth stepped forward, placed his hands gently on her shoulders, and looked down deep into her eyes. "You don’t have to doubt it. They really do accept you."
His eyes were dark and profound, as if they could grant her a sense of calm and confidence.
Clara nodded involuntarily.
Seth smiled, bent down to pick up the clothes that had fallen on the floor, and handed them to her. "Good girl. Go get changed. Once you’re ready, come downstairs for porridge. Mrs. Cheney’s skills at making it are much better than mine."
The way he said "good girl," as if coaxing a small child, was so gentle and patient it seemed to have a magical effect, making Clara blush and her heart race all over again.
...
When Seth led Clara downstairs by the hand, Mrs. Cheney had already ladled the porridge into bowls and set them on the dining table. Seeing the two walk in hand in hand, she couldn’t help but smile again. She gave them a slight bow. "Young Master, Young Madam, the porridge has cooled down enough. It’s ready to eat."
Seth pulled out a chair for Clara, then took a seat across from her.
Mrs. Cheney then ladled the porridge into smaller bowls and placed one in front of Clara and one in front of Seth.
Clara smiled at her and said, "Thank you, Mrs. Cheney."
"Young Madam, it’s my duty. You’re too kind," Mrs. Cheney quickly replied with a smile.
Clara took a sip of porridge before looking up at her again. "Mm, this porridge you made is delicious, Mrs. Cheney. It smells wonderful. No wonder Seth said you’re a great cook."
Mrs. Cheney smiled. "The Young Master is just being kind. But I’m glad you like it, Young Madam. Well then, Young Master, Young Madam, please enjoy your meal. I’ll be heading back to the main house now."
There was still work to be done at the main house, and the chauffeur was waiting outside.
"Alright," Seth nodded. After a pause, he added, "Tell the chauffeur to drive slowly and be safe."
"Yes, of course. Thank you, Young Master." Mrs. Cheney was stunned by this rare display of concern from Seth. She answered with some trepidation and backed out of the room.
After leaving, she glanced back one more time, a smile in her eyes.
’The Young Master never used to say an extra word to the staff, did he? He wasn’t even that talkative with the Master and Madam.’
’It seems the Young Master has changed quite a lot for the Young Madam’s sake.’
’That’s why she felt the Young Madam was a much better match for the Young Master than Miss Shelby.’
