Chapter 334: Trap
Chapter 334: Trap
"Strange... that doesn’t make any sense."
Jamie was losing her mind as well. The stain of losing her territory would undoubtedly become ammunition for the other deacons to attack her. Suddenly, a flash of inspiration struck her, and she clapped her hands.
"I know! Among the creatures planned for the creation of the Divine Chosen of Destruction, Night Demons were included."
"It must have been the purchased Night Demons escaping containment by accident. With corpses scattered everywhere, their reproduction accelerated rapidly."
"How the hell does a containment failure like that even happen?"
Phield thrust his sword forward and killed a Night Demon attempting to ambush him.
"By the way, why would a Divine Chosen of Destruction need Night Demons? Don’t tell me you’re trying to create rat beastfolk or something."
"Of course not."
Jamie’s eyes widened as she stared at him, completely unable to understand how he had arrived at beastfolk.
"In the First Epoch, there was neither mana nor magic. People relied on the power of bloodlines and flesh. That’s why all kinds of flesh and blood are valuable research materials to us."
"So something like that actually existed."
"Exactly. That’s why calamities targeting the first civilization can become stronger by devouring flesh and blood."
The more Jamie spoke, the more excited she became.
"We didn’t just prepare Night Demons. We also gathered all kinds of terrifying magical beasts to provide flesh. I truly hope I can witness the day the Divine Chosen of Destruction awakens."
"Egge, where’s the entrance to the dungeon?"
Phield turned toward Egge, who was carrying a shield. The poor officer nearly jumped in fright.
There were simply too many Night Demons, and the uncontracted Divine Chosen was hiding within the castle. He needed a force to share the pressure, and the captured Imperial soldiers would be a suitable choice.
"It’s in the alley ahead. We can use the underground passage. It leads directly to the dungeon."
Spotting the entrance to a drainage tunnel, Egge immediately dashed over during a brief opening and reached out to lift the manhole cover.
The moment his hand touched it, both of his arms suddenly fell to the ground.
Pfft!
Egge’s pupils trembled.
He instantly spat out a mouthful of filthy blood and was severed cleanly in half at the waist without any warning.
"Holy shit, what happened?!"
Cold sweat instantly broke out across Phield’s back.
A perfectly healthy person had suddenly been cut into two pieces.
"There’s a trap here. Miss Jamie, don’t tell me this is another surprise you’ve prepared for us."
"I have no idea either."
Jamie looked completely bewildered.
"Divine power threads that are nearly impossible to see. A Divine Chosen has set up killing traps at various intersections and passageways."
Ophelia’s reconnaissance abilities were fairly decent.
Ripples of divine power spread from the orb in her hand, echoing throughout the streets.
In the next moment, countless glowing threads were revealed.
Like an enormous spiderweb, they sealed off entrances and exits throughout the area while cleverly avoiding the routes used by the Night Demons.
"A very ingenious arrangement."
Rosalia unleashed layer upon layer of sword energy, instantly severing all the threads around them.
"Sigh... I’m sorry."
Phield ran over to Egge’s side.
The healing potion in his hand looked absurdly useless. There was no saving someone who only had half a body left.
After a long sigh, Phield said,
"You weren’t technically my soldier, but after the war, I’ll make sure you’re buried with honor."
"My lord... the armory key. Turn the small dial two and a half rotations to the left. Turn the large dial one rotation to the right."
Using the last of his strength, Egge gestured weakly toward his pocket.
Only a few seconds later, the life faded from his eyes.
Searching through Egge’s satchel, Phield found a diamond-shaped object covered in irregular inscriptions.
It was the key to the border armory of Ram Territory.
At that exact moment, a massive explosion echoed through the city.
A huge section of the distant castle burst apart.
Wood fragments and stone debris flew everywhere as a graceful figure leaped from the cloud of dust and landed lightly within the nearby residential district.
Moving swiftly through the hordes of Night Demons, Gherlos fled toward the south.
"Wait. That Divine Chosen is escaping."
With a sweep of his sleeve, Phield ordered,
"Forget everything else. Pursue the Divine Chosen first!"
Originally, since the Divine Chosen had remained inside the castle, he had planned to gather a temporary force before storming it.
He had not expected the woman to emerge on her own.
"Leave it to me!"
The gigantic dragon arm beside Rosalia smashed forward violently.
The city wall collapsed instantly, crushing a large number of Night Demons while opening a shortcut.
"Nicely done. Ophelia, you’re coming with me."
"Rosalia, take Miss Jamie and advance slowly."
"Fine... you can just leave me here."
Rosalia’s chest rose and fell slightly as she pursed her lips, looking somewhat dejected.
Her lack of speed was an undeniable weakness.
Noticing Rosalia’s mood, Phield casually patted her and said,
"Be good."
"You can say that all you want, but why are you patting me there? And besides, don’t people usually pat shoulders when comforting someone?"
Rosalia raised her hand as if she wanted to punch him, looking both annoyed and amused.
"Leave it to me. Just be careful."
The sight nearly left Jamie dumbfounded.
"Phield, exactly what kind of benefits did you promise those corrupted creatures? They’re unbelievably obedient."
"Just stay where you are."
Phield had no interest in explaining.
"Second-Tier Divine Skill, Sapphire Dragonification!"
Divine power erupted from Ophelia.
Magnificent sapphire dragon wings spread wide, as though they could cover the sky itself.
With a light motion, she grabbed Phield and flew northward.
"Wrong way, Little Chubby Dragon. We’re heading south."
"You useless lord, why didn’t you say so sooner? And stop calling me Little Chubby Dragon."
Although Ophelia wasn’t particularly fast, flying with wings was still far easier than hopping across the ground.
"So they’ve reacted already. I still underestimated the strength of this faction."
Seeing the enormous dragon wings overhead, Gherlos let out a bitter smile.
Yet the killing intent in her eyes remained unchanged.
"If you’re that eager to accompany me into death, then come."
Boom!
Ophelia folded her wings and descended with flawless precision.
After landing dominantly, she gently set Phield down.
Before they could even steady themselves, a gigantic crimson scythe rapidly enlarged before their eyes.
"A First-Tier Divine Chosen. Combat-oriented."
The moment she sensed the divine power fluctuations from the weapon, Ophelia immediately grasped the crucial information.
Her brilliant sapphire dragon claw slammed forward and sent the scythe flying away like a cannonball.
The metallic hum that followed was so intense that even Phield’s ears ached.
"Damn it. Are all members of the Shadow World Sect this reckless? They start fighting without a single word."
Phield’s figure reflected within Gherlos’s eyes.
She looked surprised.
"So young, yet protected by a Second-Tier Divine Chosen. He must have considerable status within the sect."
"Then I’ll kill him first."
With a wave of her hand, invisible threads pulled the scythe free from the cracks in a stone wall.
"Surrender. You have no chance of winning. We can talk."
Phield spoke calmly.
"Miss Jamie is with my..."
He had assumed she was one of Jamie’s subordinates. Once she learned that Jamie was with him, her fighting spirit should have collapsed.
"Huh?"
"So you’re Jamie’s perverted master?"
