Chapter 803 - 648: Gatekeeper (Part 3)
The floor was paved with some special material. Stepping on it made almost no sound, yet it carried a chilling touch.
The two of them moved forward along the main passage. On both sides were compartments sealed off by thick transparent material, most of them empty.
In a handful of them, mist curled and churned, vague twisted shadows looming inside, just like those ugly Mutant Species.
Yue Lin’s expression changed abruptly. He swung his hand and smashed the glass cover. The monster sleeping inside snapped awake in an instant, roaring as it lunged at them, only to be taken down by Yue Lin in the blink of an eye.
Yet his face had gone slightly pale, fine beads of sweat seeping out at his temples, as if he had crashed right into some horrifying secret.
Why would the laboratory of the Hand of Creation be researching these things?
They collected monster genes to wipe them out at the root...
Or for some other purpose?
For the first time, Yue Lin didn’t dare pursue the thought any further.
Shen Tang looked at Yue Lin’s startled, doubtful expression, but she remained comparatively calm. She had already seen this scene before, and she knew the scam behind it.
"Let’s keep going down. I can vaguely feel that Jin is below." she reminded softly.
Yue Lin snapped back to himself and gave a low "Mm." The two of them followed the dark staircase, continuing downward.
...
Half an hour earlier.
The elevator plummeted all the way down, alarm lights flashing red like mad, and finally stopped at
-101st floor.
The very bottom level of this underground laboratory.
The instant the elevator hit the ground, it exploded with a roar. From the smoke and dust, a tall, pitch-black figure sprang out, like a blood-drinking demonic sword, cutting down all the pursuers.
Jin’s clothes were already in tatters, his whole body drenched in blood, his own and others’ so mixed together it was impossible to tell apart. Blood beads dripped from his fingers. The hunger brought on by prolonged battle made him lift his hand and lick the bloodstain at his wrist. Black miasma coiled around him, like a god of slaughter walking out of Hell.
He walked with heavy steps, leaving a trail of blood marks as he headed to the end of the passage.
A massive door stood before him.
The door was cast from thick alloy, its surface without seams or handles, more like a special metal wall.
Behind it was the core laboratory, and no one knew what was hidden inside.
Fringe hair fell over Jin’s brow, shadowing his eyes. A pair of dark golden eyes locked onto the door, and he stepped up the stairs one step at a time.
His body’s instincts told him with crystal clarity,
What he was looking for was inside.
Jin naturally didn’t have a key to open it; he planned to simply break it down by brute force.
But in the next second, the door slowly opened on its own.
It was as if there was an invisible Energy Barrier inside the doorway, cutting off the interior from the outside. Looking in from here, there was only a hazy mist, nothing else visible.
The mist rippled like water, and an abnormally tall figure stepped out.
The man was so tall he hardly looked like an Ordinary Beastman, close to three or four meters, nearly brushing the ceiling.
He wore a white lab coat stretched so tight it was about to burst, exposing ash-blue forearms and shins, muscles bulging like stacked rocks, veins like serpents crawling all over him, exuding an inhuman terror.
He held no Weapons, standing at the door like a guardian deity. His slightly bulging eyes were dark and expressionless as he looked at Jin, as if he were looking at a rock or a corpse.
The moment he appeared, the surrounding air turned thick and heavy, even breathing felt laborious.
"Sir, please halt."
His voice was dry and flat, not threatening, yet it stated the simplest fact: no passage this way.
Jin narrowed his eyes, not striking rashly, sizing up the behemoth before him.
The Hand of Creation had set up such a laboratory in the Six Great Royal Cities, so there had to be important things or intel hidden here.
The Gatekeeper of the deepest level had to be unimaginably powerful.
This one, he was clearly the final checkpoint.
At a glance it was obvious he was a specially modified Beastman from the lab, the modification extremely successful. The aura rolling off him far surpassed that of an Ordinary Beastman, even Jin felt pressured.
If he wanted to get in today, he had to defeat this Gatekeeper.
The Gatekeeper was silently sizing up the black-haired man before him as well. So young, yet he had fought his way down here alone—his strength was indeed surprising.
Then his gaze fell on the man’s conspicuous leopard ears and golden eyes, and he spoke slowly,
"So it’s you."
Feeling the black miasma swirling around Jin, the Gatekeeper was slightly taken aback.
This time, even after going berserk, he had actually retained a sliver of reason.
Suddenly thinking of something, the Gatekeeper’s voice turned low and dangerous,
"There was a thief who snuck in before. The Crystal Core I was guarding had a small piece stolen... seems it ended up in your hands."
"You came here today for the Crystal Core, didn’t you? Unfortunately, you took the wrong path."
"Once you step onto the Yama Road I guard, you are destined to die here!"
Jin let out a cold laugh, Thunder gathering in his fist as he flashed forward.
"Oh? Then let’s see whether it’s you who dies, or I who live."
